La Selva Biological Station: My Elevator Pitch
“It’s the real deal, which is why there’s no better place than La Selva Biological Station for you to get acquainted with Costa Rica’s wildlife. Give yourself two hours here and you’ll get the equivalent of two days’ worth of wildlife viewing anywhere else. Or hit the jackpot by staying overnight.”

My Report
The timing of my trip to Costa Rica gave me only two hours at La Selva, yet I was able to see all of the wildlife above, and much, more more! In fact, I saw more in those two hours than I did in two days at Manuel Antonio. And I learned more, because the guides here are actual researchers.
La Selva isn’t fancy, but it’s authentic. You won’t be pretending to be in the jungle. You’ll really be there. So if you want to experience Costa Rican wildlife, this is the place to start.
An easy day trip from San Jose, La Selva offers two-hour guided tours, or you can stay overnight for a more complete experience. (I didn’t stay overnight. My understanding is that the accommodations are clean and functional, but do not include air conditioning.)
Also good to know: You have to wear closed-toe shoes on the trails. Bring a good flashlight. Long pants and long sleeves are recommended, as is insect repellent. It will be hot and humid; this is the jungle. And it will be amazing!
