FAQ

Welcome to LUQ, where photography and travel intersect.

Have questions? Here are some answers!

What kind of a name is Lux Umbraque?

Lux Umbraque is Latin for “light and shadow,” the two primary elements of photography.

“But it’s only two words,” you might object. Yes, except no. It’s really three: lux is “light,” umbra is “shadow,” and que, like et, means “and”; it’s just written as a suffix after a word instead of as a separate word before it.

“Isn’t that a little hard to pronounce?” Maybe, but isn’t that a small price to pay for timeless elegance?

“Do you have a nickname at least?” Yes: L.U.Q.

Do You Really Give Away $50 Every Week

Yes, and sometimes more! (Or, at least, we will once we launch in full. We’re in pre-launch mode. We are still giving away prizes, but the schedule and amounts are different.)

Is There a Cost to Enter the Contest?

No. There is no cost to enter the contest, and you may submit as many images as you like, subject to the Contest Rules.
Where Can I Find More Details About Entering the Contest?

Everything you need to know about entering the contest is in the Contest Rules. Some quick things you might like to know are:

  • There is no cost to enter.
  • You keep all rights to your submitted work.
  • You may submit any kind of photo you like. Those that are travel-based are more likely to win, and those that were taken recently are more likely to win.
  • Winning photos are chosen on a variety of subjective criteria.
  • By and large, the contest is open to people who aren’t barred by their local laws from entering.
  • This is a skill-based contest and luck plays no part.

Why Do You Keep Writing about Credit Cards?

Credit cards are a marvelous way of traveling for free (or nearly for free). For example, just putting a few thousand dollars on the right new credit card can give you enough to get a free round-trip ticket between the U.S and Europe, or two round-trip tickets within the U.S., or even a flight from the U.S. to New Zealand (one way, so you’ll want a plan to get back — maybe a second credit card!). You also have business-class options.

Do You Accept Advertising?

Yes. That’s how we pay for the site.

The nature of on-line advertising means that we don’t have control over every product or service that you might see advertised, but we only recommend products and services that we genuinely like. Even so, we always let you know when we have a financial or other arrangement that might create even the appearance of partiality.

Do you Accept Free Equipment?

Sure! What do you want to give us? 🙂
Do you Accept Guest Posts?

Sometimes. If you have an idea, let us know!
