Amazon: Up to $100 Discount if You Have the Right Amex Card (2018)

If you have the right Amex card you’re in luck, because Amazon is offering some cardholders 20% off almost anything — including cameras and other electronics — up to a total discount of $100.

Click here to see if you’re eligible (and check below for what to do if it says you’re not).

If you’ve been thinking of picking up a new piece of equipment, or if you’ve had your eye on something you couldn’t quite afford, now’s the time!

Details

To get the discount, you pay at least in part with Amex Membership Rewards — that is, with the points you get for using cards like American Express Platinum.

Even one Membership Rewards point triggers the discount. You don’t have to pay for the entire purchase with Membership Rewards. And you don’t want to, because Membership Rewards are usually much better used for things like free flights. But you do need to have Membership Rewards.

You also have to be an Amazon Prime member. If you’re not already, consider trying it out for 30 days for free. You can always cancel after you get the discount.

Amazon has other terms and some limitations, but in general, the discount applies to any physical thing Amazon sells directly!

How to Use

Here’s what you do to get your discount:

1. Activate the deal (here).

2. Add whatever you want to your cart, as long as it’s sold by Amazon and not a third party.

3. Use at least one Membership Rewards point when you check out.

4. Enjoy 20% off (up to $100).

What to Buy

Looking for some suggestions?

If you’ve been eyeing the Panasonic FZ-1000 (my favorite all-around camera) but the $800 price tag was out of reach, now you can get it for $698.

If you want something tiny to complement your current set up, take a look at the recently-released Panasonic Lumix ZS200 for roughly the same price.

(This would also be a great way to get the Nikon P900, but I would recommend waiting because Nikon has announced it’s replacement, the P1000. Either buy that, or wait a few months for the P900 to drop in price.)

Not Eligible?

If you have a Membership-Rewards earning Amex card but Amazon says you’re not eligible, try adding your Amex card as a method of payment. Then check back in a day or two. This is what I did. At first I wasn’t eligible. Then I was.

About J.M. Hoffman

A prolific writer and avid photographer, J.M. Hoffman picked up his first camera when he was eight years old. And even though he abhors a cliche, he never looked back. Acclaimed as a "master raconteur" who writes with a "flair" (Times Literary Supplement of London), Hoffman authored two non-fiction books and contributed to over a dozen others before writing The Warwick Files. He continues to write fiction and non-fiction. In addition to writing and traveling the world lecturing about his books, Hoffman has also directed a dance troupe, taught darkroom technique, and explored Patagonia on horseback. From time to time he can be seen playing table tennis poorly at the WTCC. He lives just north of New York City.
